Artistic Asides

Working in Civic (or what, for non-Canberrans, passes for our CBD) there are plenty of opportunities to stroll around during lunchtime and visit an art gallery or several. Craft ACT, Canberra Museum and Art Gallery (CMAG), Canberra Contemporary Art Space at Gorman House, Helen Maxwell Gallery and the Drill Hall Gallery at the Australian National University are all within a short walk of the centre of the city.

If you choose to literally turn your back and walk down towards Lake Burley Griffin the underpasses beneath Commonwealth Ave provide a different type of gallery. Recent contributions include these stencilled posters by Sancho. Is it just me or is there something odd about putting a copyright symbol next to a piece of street art?

Art excursion this weekend
This coming Saturday 7 November Strathnairn Arts Association is opening its Members Exhibition ‘On the Edge’ at 11.30 am. As an added bonus they are holding their Soup and Bowl Day, their major fundraiser of the year, starting at 12.00 noon – artist-made bowls are sold along with a choice of delicious homemade soups. Arrive early is my advice! The location is 90 Stockhill Drive Holt and if you haven’t been before its easy to find. The old Homestead which houses the Gallery is well worth a look in itself, not to mention all the wonderful art on sale from the Strathnairn members.

Advanced notice: Katharine Nix Studio Clearance Saturday 5 December 10.00am to 5.00pm
The Winged Dog Studio is moving so Katharine is clearing 30 years of paper works (drawings, prints, paintings, artist’s books, handmade paper, cards etc). There are also drawings by guest artist Jordy Hanson, not to mention a culling of books from the libraries of Professor Henry Nix and Katharine Nix.

  1. There is definitely something off key about the conjunction of copyright symbols and street art. Apart from anything else, how is it possible to enforce the right?
